Cecil Mamiit
Born on June 27, 1976, in Los Angeles, California, Cecil Mamiit is a tennis player who played for the US before representing the Philippines. A player of Filipino and American parents, Mamiit started playing the sport young and enjoyed an outstanding junior career. Mamiit attended Nick Bollettieri Academy and Bradeton Academy, where he graduated in 1994. He reached the finals of the US National Boy's 18s Championships in 1993 and won the Easter Bowl title in1994. In 1996, he won the NCAA singles title while still a freshman, becoming the first freshman to win the title after John McEnroe won the title in the late 1970s.
Mamiit turned pro in 1996, the same year when he won back-to-back Futures titles at the #4 and #5 segments of the USTA before winning his first Challenger title in Altos. He then went to three more Challengers finals, winning in Las Vegas and in Nainkin and losing in Rancho Mirage.
Mamiit also competed at the 1999 Pan American Games in Canada, where he lost in the final to Paul Goldstein. He also competed at the 2006 Asian Games in Doha, where he won the bronze in the men's singles. He paired up with fellow Fil-Am player Eric Taino in doubles and lost to the Indian tandem of Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes. Mamiit also played for the Philippines Davis Cup team and remained undefeated until 2008. Although the 34 year-old has not yet captured a single Grand Slam title, he holds 7 ITF titles under his belt.
