The Wimbledon Championships is the oldest and most coveted grand slam event of the year. With the extended 2015 grass court season being announced it will give even more time for the players to prepare. Here we look at the possible contenders for the upcoming Wimbledon 2015 championships:-
Gentlemen:
1. Novak Djokovic: The defending champion will look to add one more Wimbledon crown in his ever expanding grand slam tally. He looks the best contender to win Wimbledon 2015. Djokovic is quickly becoming an all-round player winning majors on every surface and with 2015 he just might be looking to seal his place as a Wimbledon great.
2. Roger Federer: Federer and Wimbledon have a love story which has stood the test of time. Winning it record 7 times it was almost sure that he would win the championships every time he played just like Sampras but then came Nadal in 2008 in the epic finale and took away his crown. Since then he has just won it twice which is mediocre considering his standard. At 33 years of age, he is showing the passion and hunger like he is a 20 year old and came close to winning in 2014. He still remains the best threat to Djokovic in 2015.
3. Andy Murray: In 2013, Murray did the unthinkable. He broke the 76 year wait of United Kingdom of having a British champion. Since then he has been having a good grass season but has not been able to defeat Federer or Djokovic on grass. If he can find a way through them then there will be no stopping him.
4. Rafael Nadal: He is a favorite in whichever tournament he plays but this has not been the case at Wimbledon. He has been ousted before the quarterfinals of the championships in the previous few years due to injury concerns. Grass has not been his strong suit but if he can recover from his back and appendix injuries he can give strong competition to the remaining contenders.
. The Others: Wimbledon can spring a surprise or two. As it did in 2014, Wimbledon 2015 can be a platform for the new generation to shine. Dimitrov, Nishikori, Raonic are the usual suspects to upset the big heavyweights and stamp their authority on the championships.
Ladies:
1. Serena Williams: Regarded as the best female player ever by many greats the powerful Williams packs a punch in whichever tournament she plays. Ending the year as no 1, winning the WTA tour finals must give Serena some confidence after getting knocked out in 2014 in the third round in an infamous manner. She will be gunning for her 6th title at Wimbledon 2015.
2. Maria Sharapova: She won her first title way back in 2004 at the age of 17, now much more mature and poses a much greater threat to others, Sharapova has been quiet at Wimbledon but will surely look forward to changing that to win her second title at Wimbledon 2015.
3. Petra Kvitova: Defending champion surprised many by winning the championships in 2014. If she gains rhythm and confidence in the early rounds, she may go on a tear reminiscent of her title run.
4. Eugenie Bouchard: Last year’s runner up had a scintillating 2014.Still just 20 years of age, she has immense tennis IQ which can propel her to further heights at Wimbledon 2015.
5. Simona Halep: Like Bouchard, Halep had an extraordinary 2014 reaching the semifinals of Wimbledon and final of WTA tour finals. In red hot form, she will be gunning for the title at wimlledon 2015.
6. The Others: Ivanovic, Safarova and Wozniacki are the other threats that the main contenders have to face as they can surprise any opponent on their day but we all know how the WTA can surprise us.
