World number nine Janko Tipsarevic has finally won the Chennai Open after five unsuccessful attempts.
The Serbian defeated Spanish upstart Roberto Bautista Agut, who had stunned number one seed Tomas Berdych in the semis, in the final 3-6 6-1 6-3.
“I am extremely proud of finally winning in Chennai,” Tipsarevic said. “I just love this place and was desperate to win. It also gives me just the start I need for the season.”
However, Tipsarevic wasn’t getting carried away about his chances of claiming his maiden major at this month’s Australian Open.
“Men’s tennis is tougher than ever before. Its not easy to beat the top players,” he said.
“To win a Grand Slam I will have to beat at least three of the top four. I hope I can achieve that some day.”
