Novak Djokovic has begun the American hard court season and his US Open defence in style with a straight-sets victory over France’s Richard Gasquet to lift the Rogers Cup in Toronto on Sunday.

The Serbian triumphed in the decider 6-3, 6-2 over Gasquet to defend the title he won 12 months ago in Montreal.

“It’s been a long week, a tough week, especially for the players coming from the Olympics but I am very glad that I came here,” Djokovic said.

Djokovic’s next destination will be the Cincinnati Masters ahead of the US Open which begins on August 27, however the Serb said he wasn’t targetting the number one ranking which he recently lost to Wimbledon champion Roger Federer.

“I was just thinking about winning this tournament for the moment,” said Djokovic.

“Rankings are going to follow up with the success you, as a player, have so I will try to perform my best next week and prepare as best as I can for the US Open.”
