Caroline Wozniacki suffered a stunning upset in the Rogers Cup on Wednesday, losing to Roberta Vinci with a score of 6-4, 7-5 in the second round match.
Wozniacki had a won a WTA-leading five titles in the year and was up 5-1 in the second set. However, she did not have a chance to recover when her Italian opponent rebounded with three break points for a successful upset.
This is the third time that Vinci, ranked no. 22 has reached the third round of the Rogers Cup. She had previous wins in this year in Barcelona, Budapest, and Hertongenbosch.
“This is the best victory in my life,” Vinci said. “I was 5-1 down but I knew that I can win the set because it was a lot of wind, so some mistakes. I tried to stay focused and play aggressive. That’s it, this is the key why I won the set.”
Windy conditions were partly to blame why Wozniacki never got going against her 28 year old opponent. Wozniacki had a bye in the first round and she had hit returns long twice in the first set point.
“It was very difficult at first with the wind,” she said. “Especially when you threw it up. It was going everywhere, so definitely that didn’t make it easy. It was blowing in different directions, but it’s the same for both players.”
