It seems like a second Australian Open title was in the cards for Novak Djokovic last Sunday, when he faced off with Andy Murray and dashed Britain’s hopes of winning a singles men’s title in the Grand Slams after almost 75 years. His first win was in 2008.
It was not an easy trek for Djokovic, however. He had to go past Roger Federer in the semis, in a match held just two months after he led the Serbian team to victory in the Davis Cup. Defeating Murray was also not that easy for the Serbian player, who has known his opponent for a long time and often practiced with him.
'’We have known each other for such a long time. It was difficult tonight,” he said after the match. An hour after the winning match Djokovic went out into the balcony of the Rod Laver Arena and waved his trophy at the crowd of cheering spectators gathered below.
Murray conceded that Djokovic played a good match.
“I thought Novak played unbelievably well. It’s tough, but you have to deal with it.” He still has two win a Grand Slam final, and the drought in the British side continues. The last Brit to win a Grand Slam singles title was Fred Perry in 1936.
