Only four matches were needed to decide who would be the winner of 2010 Fed Cup. There was no surprise - Italian team won the cup after defeating USA 3:1.
The match has been decided only in singles games. First game that was played on Saturday finished with a 6:4, 6:2 win by Francesca Schiavone. Current number 7 in the world and winner of this year’s Roland Garros beat 19 year-old CoCo Vandeweghe. After the second game Italy lead 2:0. The winner of the second game was Flavia Pennetta, who defeated Bethanie Mattek-Sands 7:6 (4), 6:2.
After the first day Italy needed only one win to secure the victory. The first match of the day finished with a big surprise as a 19 year-old Melanie Oudin crashed Schiavone. The result of the game was even more shocking than the defeat - Schiavone was only able to win four games during the whole match. The deciding game was played between Flavia Pennetta and CoCo Vandeweghe. The Italian had no problems with winning the match, defeating the American 6:1, 6:2.
Due to secured win of Italy the doubles game between Liezel Huber/Melanie Oudin (USA) and Sara Errani/Roberta Vinci (Italy) has not been played.
The victory was the third one in total, and the second one in a row for the Italian team. Before 2010 and 2009 they also won in 2006. In 2010 and 2009 Italians defeated USA, and in 2006 the runner-up of the Fed Cup was Belgium.
