During the final round of the Generali Ladies, Ana Ivanovic won her ninth WTA Tour title as she defeated Patty Schnyder in a 6-1, 6-2 game.
The victory is Ivanovic’s second WTA Tour title in two years. The last time the 22-year-old Serb won a title was in 2008 after she captured the French Open and was able to rise to the top of the ranks which she held for 12 weeks.
When asked about her victory, Ivanovic said, “Winning again after two years is so wonderful, just unbelievable… I have been waiting so long for this and I worked hard to achieve it.”
The Serb is currently ranked at No. 29, and after 19 months, this is her first time to grace the final round in any tournament. This was also a surprise since she initially did not plan on appearing at the event. However, she accepted a late wild card offered to her after Serena Williams pulled out of the event after suffering from a foot injury.
“I felt very well and hit the balls well… Patty played well all week so I tried to put her under pressure from the start. That paid off,” said Ivanovic, whose strategy definitely worked and was not able to drop a single set during the tournament.
Patty Schnyder, on the other hand, has a total of 11 career titles and was gracing her third final event in Linz. Unfortunately, she has not won any final round during any of her past appearances in 2005 and 2007.
