Roger Federer’s vacation ended with his newly acquired Cincinnati Masters title. After a quick vacation, a well-rested Roger Federer dominated the Cincinnati Masters by defeating Mardy Fish in a 6-7(5), 7-6(1), 6-4 game last Sunday. This is Federer’s second consecutive Cincinnati Masters title, but his fourth Cincy title overall.
Throughout the tournament, Federer was actually barely gracing the court since his opponents were either injured or that his game was simply going great.
It can be said that for the first time this year, Federer’s play was pushed to the limit as Mardy Fish kept coming close, dropping the very last set after the only service break in the match.
As it turns out, the time off came in handy.
According to Federer, “Maybe I was just a touch fitter than him today,” regarding his performance against Fish’s.
The Swiss ended his running streak of three straight defeats at tournament finals. This is his first Masters event since he won the same event last year. This is actually Federer’s 63rd title, landing himself at fifth place at the Open Era in a tie with Björn Borg. Currently, Pete Sampras is at fourth place with 64, while Jimmy Connors holds the top record with 109.
