Opening the 2010 Wimbledon Championship with a bang and a bit of theatrics in the part of Rafael Nadal and a victory for Serena Williams.
During his first round match, Rafael Nadal took a rather nasty spill when he lost his footing and ended landing on his back while going against Kei Nishikori of Japan. Good thing his equipment did not hit him in the head, otherwise that would have been a different story. Like the pro that he is, Nadal toweled off and despite all spills and tumbles, Nadal emerged as the winner of the 6-2, 6-4, 6-4 match.
Although last year Nadal was not able to defend his championship due to some tendinitis problems in his knees, he is now back at the top spot and once more fighting to get on top. “I’m happy to be here again,” said Nadal.
As for the women, Serena Williams made her presence felt by defending her title from Michelle Larcher de Brito from Portugal in the first round. During their game that ended in a 6-0, 6-4 victory, Williams made 15 aces that lorded over the 17-year old’s performance.
Other winners during the first round of the Wimbledon include Andy Murray, Robin Soderling, David Ferrer, Sam Querrey, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, and the number one seeded in Wimbledon, Roger Federer.
