Jelena Jankovic jump started the season on a good note, winning the 2010 Indian Wells title by winning a three straight set victory over Caroline Wozniacki. This is her 12th career title and the first win since August.
The Serb player, who was a former number one came into the tournament ranked 9th in the world and seeded at sixth while Wozniacki was seeded second. She stared the match on her advantage, leading in the first set with 4-0 before Wozniacki made a break for a score of 4-2. “I went out there knowing my game plan,” the Serbian player said. “I wanted to be really aggressive, but at the same time patient and not really go for too much or go over the limit with some balls.”
“I waited for my opportunities, and when I had them, I took them,” she added.
Prior to playing at Indian Wells Jankovic was in Monterey where she was the top seed and where she, unfortunately, made a first round exit. Wozniacki moves up to number 2 in the rankings when they are updated on Monday.
“Jelena was playing a good match,” Wozniacki said of her opponent. “She didn’t make a lot of mistakes. I tried to change it when I saw it was not going my way, but I just made a few too many errors on the important points.”
