Arthur Ashe Stadium roared as Novak Djokovic displayed an excellent impression of the former No. 1 pro tennis player John McEnroe, who was a spectator on Monday night’s match at the 2009 U.S. Open. That night, Djokovic crushed Radek Stepanek and moved forward to the Men’s Single quarterfinals.
Djokovic is known for his YouTube impressions of his fellow tennis player Maria Sharapova and Rafael Nadal. But the crowd at the stadium loved his display of talent, “If the moment is right, it comes spontaneously,” Djokovic said. “I thought the moment was right. The crowd loved it, and that was the most important thing.”
The No. 4 seeded showed a variety of McEnroe impressions which included the temper tantrums, unfurling serve, yelling “It was wide!” to an empty umpire’s chair, and of course, the “You cannot be serious!” line. 10,000 fans loved what they saw that night at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.
To top the evening’s event was when McEnroe himself got up from his seat, took his tie off and came down from the broadcast booth to the court, and hit a few ball at Djokovic request. He also showed the audience and Djokovic how the original McEnroe play’s it out. The senior player demonstrated his great serve and ended the show with is belt-high volleys.
