“It’s staggering that I’ve been able to play so well for so many years now and stay injury-free,” said Federer. “I’m happy I broke the record here because this is always the tournament that meant the most to me. It definitely feels like coming full circle, starting it here and ending it here.”

The match between the Swiss national and the American was the longest men’s single finals to date.

Roddick challenged Federer in the beginning of the match, moving quickly to the net giving the Swiss a run for the ball and causing the American to have a 2 set lead. But then, Federer took control over the match and gained winning points. Roddick held on but unfortunately made some errors in the key moments in the match paving the way for Federer to win.

“He’s a true champion,” said Roddick. “He deserves everything he gets.”andy roddick

Sampras, who was a spectator said, “He’s a stud… He’s only 27. He’ll contend here for many years, and the U.S. Open, and all the majors. If he just keeps it going and stays healthy, he could go to 18, 19, potentially. The guy, he’s a legend. Now he’s an icon.”
