Garrigues and Pascual Bags French Open Doubles Title

Spanish tennis players Anabel Medina Garrigues and Virginia Ruano Pascual took home their second consecutive women’s doubles title at the 2009 French Open.

This is the 10th Grand Slam women’s doubles title for Medina Garrigues and her second with Ruano Pascual. The team also won the title during the 2008 French Open.

Ruano Pascual’s other eight wins were with now retired Paola Suarez. Four of those 8 wins were achieved at Roland Garros. Her other doubles title include three US Open wins and one Aussie Open. She also won a mixed doubles title with fellow Spaniard Tomas Carbonell at Roland Garros during the French Open 2000.

“I never had the feeling that they could hurt us,” Ruano Pascual continued. “I never felt any pressure, and I never felt we were going to be in trouble.”

The win is the second Grand Slam title for twenty-six year old Median Garrigues. Aside from this she was won several doubles matches at the ITF Circuit and at Tier II, Tier III, and Tier IV Events.

This was the first Grand Slam doubles bid for second place winners Vesnina and Azarenka.
