Russian player Dinara Safina beats Caroline Wozniacki to win the Madrid Open with 6-2, 6-4. This is the young players second title since her win at the Italian Open in Rome.
The finals were held at the Caja Majica in Madrid, Spain where the 23 year old player, who is known as the ‘Little Sister of Marat Safin’, overpowered 18 year old Wozniacki. She got off to a quick start and scored a break during the third game.
“I think the match was pretty good,” said Safina, “I was trying to play as aggressively as I could and put her under pressure.” She also adds that she was dominants at the crucial moments of the game.
Despite her loss Wozniacki still kept Safina on her toes and had the top-ranked player scrambling during the 4th game.
Wozniacki, who is currently ranked in the top 10, said, “I take it one step at a time and now I’m top ten so I have nine spots left to go.”
This marks the 11th career title for the young player. Her recent victories makes her the current world No 1 ahead of Serena Williams. Safina is looking forward to continue her successful streak in the upcoming French Open, which will be played on hard clay.
