As expected, Dinara Safina finally climb the top on the WTA Tour, Monday, and officially got the No.1 ranking. Being the younger sister of Marat Safin, she and Marat are considered as the first ever brother-sister duo that have conquered the No.1 ranking in all history of professional tennis.
Safina reached a major final for two times and was yet to take her victory on a Grand Slam title. Such achievement makes her the 19th woman in the tennis history to reach the top rankings from the first day they were introduced in the 1975. Maria Sharapova was widely known to be the first Russian woman to reach the top rank and now, Safina is the only second Russian woman to achieve the same spot.
Even when Safina was defeated by the American Serena Williams in the Australian Open final in the previous year, she was able to take over the title. Also, she had lost a match against Ana Ivanovic in the last year’s French Open final.
Safina’s older brother, Marat Safin have had his share of winning and ranking as No.1 on the 2000 men’s tour and took his victory on the first two Grand Slam singles titles on the same year.
From a video posted on the WTA’s Website, Safina commented that her brother is still much better than her for winning two Grand Slam titles. She still had to work hard and play lots of games to be able to achieve what her brother has achieved or even one day surpass Marat’s successes.
