World No. 26 Frances Tiafoe emerged victorious over countryman Taylor Fritz in the Terra Wortmann Open championship match, sealing a standout week in Halle in style on Sunday.

The 33rd edition of the Terra Wortmann Open concluded on Sunday with an all-American final featuring former Top 10 player Frances Tiafoe and fifth seed Taylor Fritz on Halle grass courts.

In his on-court interview, Marc Kovacs' pupil outlined: “I don’t even know what clip I was serving in the first set, but I felt like I couldn’t miss one.

“I returned really well. I had no troubles on my serve the whole match, and it just feels good to get this done. I played a clean match, but I had to. He’s a hell of a player and a hell of a competitor, too.

"I knew he was going to make it hard out there at the end, and I played some great tennis. Luck was on my way a little bit,” he added.

In his tournament debut, the unseeded American player built an outstanding campaign on his way to the final, where he faced and defeated compatriot Fritz, 6-4, 6-4, in 67 minutes.

Therefore, the 28-year-old clinched his fourth title on Tour, the biggest of his career, becoming the seventh American ATP 500 champion in series history.

“I’ve lost a lot of 500 finals. I’ve lost a lot of finals in my career,” Tiafoe remarked. “This is big. I just want to say one of my favourite scriptures: The pain that you’re feeling does not compare to the joy that is coming. Obviously, that has been proven very true."

“A couple of weeks ago, I had one of the toughest losses of my career at the French Open, and to come back and have a good week in Stuttgart and win here for my biggest title, beating the players I did, it’s a huge testimony to that quote. It’s something I’ve been living by,” he outlined.

Throughout the title match, he stayed calm and collected, clinical behind his serve. Playing with aggression, he damaged his adversary with consistency and power without facing a break point.

All in all, Tiafoe converted two of seven break points and won 91 percent of the points on his first serve.

Moreover, the run on German soil saw him earn multiple Top 10 wins in one event for the first time, battling past the likes of world No. 10 Flavio Cobolli, No. 4 Felix Auger-Aliassime (saved 3 match points), and No. 9 Fritz.

With the win, the 2024 US Open semifinalist will crack back into the Top 20 on Monday, bringing home his first trophy at tour level since 2023.
