Two-time ATP title holder Lorenzo Musetti will miss Wimbledon as he continues to recover from the injury sustained last May in Rome, the Italian player announced on Wednesday.
World No. 15 Lorenzo Musetti shared an update on the thigh injury he sustained during the Italian Open, which forced him to skip Roland Garros.
“I want to update you on my recovery from the injury I sustained in Rome: rehabilitation is going very well, and the medical results are encouraging," the Italian wrote in a post on Instagram.
"Unfortunately, as I have not yet been able to begin a full athletic training program, and after careful evaluation, we have come to the difficult conclusion that I will not be able to participate in Wimbledon this year," he added.
The Championships' former semifinalist has seen his 2026 season disrupted by a series of injuries.
Early in January, he launched his campaign in Hong Kong, making it all the way through the final, where he lost to Alexander Bublik in straight sets.
Playing some of his best tennis at the Australian Open, the 24-year-old surged as a solid contender for the title in Melbourne, advancing to his first quarterfinal Down Under.
However, his run came to an end with an injury heartbreak - upper right leg - while leading 6-4, 6-3, 1-3, handing 24-time major champion, Novak Djokovic, a walkover into the semifinals.
After the match, the Serbian outlined: “I was on my way home tonight. These kinds of things happen in sport. It happened to me a few times, but being in the quarters of a Grand Slam, two sets to love up, and being in full control, it’s so unfortunate...
"He should have been a winner today, no doubt.”
Ahead of the 'Sunshine Double', Musetti was set to play in Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro, but after undergoing further medical tests, he decided to withdraw from the tournaments to focus on his rehabilitation.
Still far from being 100 percent fit, he returned to action in Indian Wells, falling early in straight sets to Marton Fucsovics.
Disappointed, he withdrew from the Miami Open, targeting a comeback in the clay-court swing.
Almost a month later, the former world No. 5 suffered an early exit in Monte-Carlo, ending his hopes to return to the final for the second season in a row.
By mid-April, he clinched encouraging results in Barcelona and Madrid, reaching the quarterfinals and the round of 16, respectively.
On home soil, a femoral rectus injury stopped the Carrara native against eventual runner-up Casper Ruud in the fourth round.
“It is not an easy decision, but it is the right one. My priority is to return to the court at 100 percent,” he remarked in his post.
Being the first alternate in men's singles, countryman Matteo Berrettini, currently ranked No. 49, will replace Musetti in the main draw.
The Roman-born thrived at Roland Garros, digging deep to reach the last eight when a hip issue forced him to retire.
Now, the 2021 Wimbledon finalist has earned a new chance to shine on a surface that suits his game to perfection.
