World No. 25 Arthur Fils dismissed Czech Jiri Lehecka in straight sets to reach the semifinals at the Mutua Madrid Open against world No. 1 Jannik Sinner; neither player had ever advanced to the last four before at Caja Magica.
Former world No. 14 Arthur Fils progressed into his first career semifinal at the Mutua Madrid Open by dispatching 11th seed Jiri Lehecka 6-3, 6-4 in 74 minutes on Wednesday evening.
"I am very happy to be in the semis here, as the last two years, I had never won a match or a set here, so to be in the semis feels very good," expressed the French player after the match.
"When it is slow and heavier [conditions], I feel good. I know with my fitness, I can hold for three or four hours in these conditions. I feel very good."
In a rematch of their 2026 Miami Open semifinal, Lehecka and Fils met for the fifth time on Tour at Manolo Santana Stadium in their bid to go deep in the event, two matches away from a potential grand finale.
The reigning Barcelona champion imposed his game with a combination of high-quality shot-making and power, extending his winning streak to 9 matches since winning the ATP 500 event by mid-April.
The four-time ATP title holder took the first set 6-3 in just 35 minutes without facing a break point on his serve.
Moreover, he stayed solid behind his serve and precise on the return, hitting 7 winners (2 aces) against 8 unforced errors, just one set away from the next round.
As for Lehecka, his return game was notably lacking against the Frenchman, as he failed to force a single break point in a set he would eventually surrender.
In contrast to the consistent, powerful performances he showcased on his way to the quarterfinals in Madrid, where he took out seeded players Lorenzo Musetti and Alex Michelsen.
As the second set wore on, the 24-year-old kicked up a level, delivering a more consistent display.
Nonetheless, Fils, 21, remained on course, holding his ground in commanding fashion; when the Miami Open runner-up led 3-2, the 21st seed had yet to drop a point on his first delivery.
Following an extended baseline rally, the world No. 25 converted the break in the seventh game and held to love, flipping the script to open a 5-3 advantage.
A physically demanding 10th game saw the players rally, executing cross-court groundstrokes with depth and accuracy; eventually, the Bondoufle native came out on top 6-4, wrapping up the overall win.
Following a dominant display, Fils became the first Frenchman to advance to the semifinals in Madrid since 2008, his fourth in 2026 after Doha, Miami, and Barcelona.
Furthermore, he has set up a blockbuster clash against world No. 1 Jannik Sinner, who earlier ended wild card Rafael Jodar's dream run on home soil with a 6-2, 7-6(0) victory.
Jodar fell to the four-time Grand Slam champion in a high-level encounter, with the Spaniard pushing his adversary to the edge at times.
βHe pushed me to the limitβ, said Sinner in his on-court interview. βHeβs an incredible player. I tried to prepare as best I could, and I am truly happy. It was a match of the highest quality.
"I had a bit of luck in the second set, but also drew on my experience. I am delighted to be in the semifinals here for the first time. It means a great deal to me.β
On the other side of the net, Sinner was nearly flawless, saving break points in the eighth game before taking 11 points in a row to close out the second set tiebreak and the win just shy of two hours.
As a result, the Italian player became the sixth man to complete the set of semifinals at all nine Masters 1000 tournaments, extending his winning streak at this level to 26 matches.
Sinner leads Fils 1-0 in their series, a semifinal match that dates back to 2023 in Montpellier, with the former notching a straight-set win on the hard courts.
