Top seed USA reaches back-to-back quarterfinals in Perth after surging as Group A winner

With tie victories over Argentina and Spain, defending champions Team USA finished its group stage as Group A winners, booking a ticket back to the United Cup quarterfinals.

Meanwhile, Argentina qualified as the best runner-up with a 1-1 tie score and a 4-2 match record, progressing into the last eight at the mixed team event for the first time.

According to the schedule, the winner of Group A and the best runner-up would meet in the first quarterfinal.

Nonetheless, having played one another during the group stage, the top seeds will face Group E winner, Greece, instead, while Argentina takes on Switzerland, which topped Group C.

On Wednesday, the day session will feature two-time champions, the United States, against Greece, with resurgent Stefanos Tsitsipas and Maria Sakkari in top form.

Led by world No. 4 Coco Gauff and former US Open finalist Taylor Fritz, the North American team recorded 2-1 tie wins with both players losing one of their singles matches.

Gauff, 21, suffered an upset at the hands of Spaniard Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, who defeated the Roland-Garros champion in three sets on Monday.

World No. 9 Fritz fell to an inspired performance by Argentine Sebastian Baez, who notched the biggest win of his career by ranking, becoming the first player to win a match on tour in 2026.

Moreover, playing mixed doubles against Spain and Argentina, the Gauff-Christian Harrison duo finished unbeaten, closing out both ties in style.

Greece Surges

The Greek campaign has been flawless from the get-go, opening with a 3-0 score over Team Japan, led by former world number one Naomi Osaka, whom Sakkari beat in straight sets.

At the time of facing Great Britain, the 30-year-old stayed relentless to earn her first win in five matches (6-3, 3-6, 6-1) over former US Open champion Emma Raducanu.

“She really showed incredible tennis today, a lot of improvements she has made to her game,” Tsitsipas said, speaking about his teammate’s performance.

“The shots are there. She has those shots. How can we utilise those to take them to the maximum? She actually did that with brave tennis and going for the kill.”

Then, the men’s singles match soon turned into an enthralling battle with Tsitsipas, who missed much of the 2025 season due to a back injury, rallying in vintage mode to overpower Brit Billy Harris 4-6, 6-1, 7-6(4)in over two hours.

“I would like to congratulate Billy. He put up an incredible performance,” outlined the Athens native. “I haven’t played such a high-quality match in such a long time. He did great, pushing me to my limits. I think matches like that are great for the sport.”

The mixed doubles sealed the tie for Greece 2-1, booking their spot in the last eight.

Overall, they qualified with a 2-0 tie score and an impressive 5-1 match record.

In the night session, Switzerland, the first nation to qualify for the quarterfinals, will battle against Argentina at the RAC Arena.

Led by playing captain Stan Wawrinka, they launched their campaign, recording a 3-0 score over France.

World No. 11 Belinda Bencic has played a clinical role for her country, delivering some of her best tennis to emerge victorious in singles, as well as in doubles alongside Jakub Paul.

“We’re living in Belinda’s world again,” shared Wawrinka after their win over Italy. “She’s showing us why we’re here again. I’m quite happy with my level. Of course, I would have loved to win it. But they finished the job. We are happy as a team. That is the most important.”

Wawrinka, 40, has set off his farewell season at the United Cup, bidding to end an illustrious career on a high note.

In Sydney, Australia (host country), Belgium, and Czechia (best runner-up) have already qualified for the quarterfinals, which will take place from Thrusday to Friday.

The last spot available in Sydney will be decided tomorrow between Poland and the Netherlands at the Ken Rosewall Arena.

The city will also host the semifinals, followed by the United Cup Final on Sunday, 11, 2026.
