World No. 46 Joao Fonseca continues to write history for his country at the Swiss Indoors Basel, where on Saturday, he became the first Brazilian finalist at the ATP 500 level...

At the age of 19, Joao Fonseca prevailed over Spaniard Jaume Munar with a 7-6(4), 7-5 win just shy of two hours, qualifying for the biggest final of his career on Swiss soil.

ā€œHyped and hungry for more,ā€ the 2024 Next Gen ATP Finals winner wrote on his Instagram account.

The fourth youngest finalist in the history of the Swiss Indoors Basel tournament will battle against eighth seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina on Sunday, moving within one match of capturing a maiden ATP 500 crown.

The world No. 18 made it through to the championship match, his fourth of the season, as Frenchman Ugo Humbert retired down 6-7, 1-3 with a physical issue.

Fonseca leads Davidovich Fokina 1-0 in their series, having played one another for the first time this season in Cincinnati. In a tight match, the latter was forced to retire in the second set with an injury.

On Friday, the event in Basel experienced a dramatic quarterfinal journey with three of the four encounters ending abruptly in retirement.

The only man who conducted business as usual was Umbert, dismissing American qualifier Reilly Opelka 7-6(0), 6-4 in 83 minutes, reaching back-to-back semifinals in as many weeks.

However, the Stockholm Open runner-up would follow the same unfortunate pattern on Saturday, handing the in-form Spanish player a walkover with what seemed to be a hip issue.

The Brazilian teenager delivered a dazzling performance, easily generating power on the forehand to hit 18 winners en route to pocketing a monumental first set tiebreak 7-6(4) in 61 minutes.

In the second set, Munar, 28, came out on top after converting the first break of the match in the third game, which he backed up to earn a 3-1 advantage.

They went on serve until the Manacor native double-faulted, before Fonseca broke serve in his first attempt to even the scoreline 4-4.

Then, in a highly competitive contest, the Buenos Aires champion found an edge in the twelfth game when Munar committed an unforced error, gifting his adversary a crucial double break to close out 7-5.

The first Brazilian to reach a final above the ATP 250 level since three-time Roland-Garros champion Gustavo Kuerten (2023) is chasing his second and biggest title of his career this weekend in his breakout season.

On his way to the final, he stunned defending champion Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the first round, moving past seventh seed Jakub Mensik and ninth seed Denis Shapovalov, both by walkover, before knocking down Munar.

Meanwhile, Fokina, the only seeded player left in the draw, will bid to win his first title at tour level in his fifth career title match.

The 26-year-old who has been delivering his A-game this season stands 16-6 at the ATP 500 level in 2025.

A stellar showdown awaits the Swiss crowd in Basel tomorrow.
