Following a fearless tennis display to cap off the evening at the Swiss Indoors Basel on Thrusday, fourth seed Casper Ruud raced past three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka 6-4, 7-6 in one hour and 41 minutes.
Building momentum after capturing his first indoor title in Stockholm last Sunday, he extended his winning streak to six matches, advancing to his 20th hard-court quarterfinal, 62nd overall, a new career milestone.
As a result, he made history for his country, becoming the first Norwegian player to reach the last eight at the venue.
Next, the world No. 11 will meet eighth seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, an encounter between two players at the highest level that promises to thrill the crowd in a battle for a semifinal spot at the ATP 500 tournament.
The Spaniard rallied from a set down to beat in-form Jenson Brooksby in three sets on Tuesday.
Ruud leads the Spanish player 3-2 in their series; their latest match took place at the French Open last year on the red clay surface.
The Match as It Happened
The three-time major champion came out firing, but so did Ruud, resulting in an early trade of breaks exchanged to set level at 2-2.
Making his 18th appearance in Basel, the Swiss veteran hit the court off the back of earning his first hard-court win of the season at tour level, defeating world No. 52 Miomir Kecmanovic in straight sets on Tuesday.
From there, they went toe-to-toe on serve, with Wawrinka winning 80 percent of the points on his first serve to Ruud’s 79 percent.
Norway’s top racquet found an edge on the tenth game to convert the lone break of the set, closing out 6-4 in 41 minutes.
The 40-year-old conceded the first set but went back to center court, ready to continue to deliver some of his best tennis this season on home soil.
Excited to push forward, he took the break in the third game and held to grab a 3-1 lead, seizing his chances when the Oslo native double-faulted.
Unrelenting, the 26-year-old set the scoreline square 3-3 with a break of serve.
Small margins separated the players, which unfolded into a second-set tiebreak.
Showcasing consistency from the baseline, Ruud fired an ace to seal the win 7-5, breaking new ground in Switzerland.
A Late-Season Surge
In a season of ups and downs, the highlight of the year for the Norwegian player came early in May when he captured his maiden ATP Masters 1000 in Madrid.
Halfway into the season, he skipped Wimbledon due to a knee injury sustained in Roland-Garros, returning to official competition in Toronto, Canada, where eventual runner-up Karen Khachanov halted his comeback campaign.
Then, the 2022 US Open finalist failed to make it through the second round in New York, shocked by world No. 72 Raphael Collignon in a dramatic five-setter.
Nonetheless, the 14-time ATP titlist is bouncing back, looking to end 2025 strong, with Madrid and Stockholm already under his belt, and his sights on qualifying for the Nitto ATP Finals.
As of today, he stands in 11th place in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin; only eight players qualify for the year-end competition.
Last season, he progressed to the semifinals in Turin, losing to eventual champion and former world No. 1 Jannik Sinner.
World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz, defending champion Sinner, and 24-time major winner Novak Djokovic have secured their ticket to the Finals.
Following his impressive run at the Rolex Shanghai Masters, the Serbian, a seven-time champion at the season finale, notched his place at the prestigious event.
