Two-time US Open winner Venus Williams has been kicked out of this years singles tournament by qualifier Greet Minnen.

This is the 24th time that the former World Number 1 has appeared in the US Open. Back in 2000 and 2001, she had won back-to-back titles. She had received a wildcard to play in New York this year.

The opening round match against Minnen was also her 100th US Open match and her 356th Grand Slam match. The only other player to have played more Grand Slam matches is her sister Serena Williams who has been in 423 matches.

She took the loss in good nature, giving credit to her opponent, saying:

“I have to give credit to my opponent.

“I mean, there wasn’t a shot she couldn’t make. Even when I hit really amazing shots, she just hit a winner or a drop shot.

“I don’t think I played badly. I think it was just one of those days where it’s just unlucky.”

Williams scored six break points but Minnen fended them off and had 24 winners compared to only 10 from Williams.

“Incredible to play a legend like [Williams],” Minnen said after her win.

“I have huge respect for her, to be there at 43 years old, its amazing.

“She has amazing strokes, amazing serve, so I really tried to play aggressive, make her move as much as possible, even hit a few drop shots, which Im not used to – but Ill keep doing it, I think.”

Minnen will go up against Sachia Vickery in the second round.
