Doping accusations and a subsequent tennis ban have led tennis player Mikael Ymer to retire from the sport, announcing his decision on Friday.

He has been suspended for 18 months following a suspension after he missed three doping tests.

In his tweet, he said:

“Hey guys I’ve decided to retire from professional Tennis. Thank you all for the amazing memories! What a ride it’s been! I wish all my old colleagues well going forward in competition.”

Back in July, the International Tennis Federation had charged Ymer after he missed three “out of competition test attempts” in 12 months.

He had initially been cleared by an independent tribunal but the ITF had appealed the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), and it ruled in favor of the ITF.

Ymer, who was ranked number 51 at the time, was accused of having, “failed in ensuring his compliance with the anti-doping regulations by omitting to verify his whereabouts”.

In his social media post, Ymer added that he was banned, “despite never having used nor been accused of using banned substances.”

“I find their decision to try me again and subsequently find me guilty, unfair,” Ymer added.

His last major appearance was in the third round of Wimbledon where he lost to Colombian player – Daniel Galan.
