Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina stunned third seed Casper Ruud, battling from a set down to secure a 7-6(4), 4-6, 7-6(4) win after three hours and five minutes, progressing into the quarterfinals at the Masters 1000 event.

In his on-court interview, the 24-year-old outlined: “I kept very focused on every point. He had the serve to close the match, but I was focused on every point to be there and not give up. It was very tough. We played long rallies with a lot of pressure. When I broke for 4-5, it was a show of power to finish the match.”

The Spaniard hit first to claim the first set tiebreak 7-6(4) in one hour and 15 minutes, fending off two break points in the sixth game.

Neither player dropped serve throughout a tight opener in which Davidovich Fokina struck 27 winners to the Norwegian’s 14.

Ruud broke early in the second set to take a 2-1 lead, requesting medical treatment in his lower back area.

When the two-time Roland Garros runner-up opened a 3-2 advantage, the rain disrupted play, suspending all action on the Grandstand for one hour and a half.

Once it resumed, the Malaga native broke to level up in the sixth game, holding to jump 4-3 ahead in the score.

The lead, however, was short-lived as the player mentored by Jorge Aguirre hit two double faults that would cost him high.

Ruud carried the momentum, producing a crucial break in the ninth game, stepping up the pressure to even the contest at one set apiece.

The World No. 5 improved his second serve performance, and wise on return, he found a way to save two of the three break points he faced while charging at the net, winning 70 percent of his approaches.

The edgy match, decided by small margins in a tight third-set tiebreak, saw the Oslo-born breaking to set off the decider.

With the wind in his sails, Ruud looked unstoppable, hitting the ball cleanly off both wings and shutting the door to keep his advantage for most of the set.

At 5-3, leading 30/0, the 10-time ATP titlist saw Davidovich Fokina regroup to narrow the gap to 4-5.

Holding his nerve, the 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters 1000 runner-up came out strong to produce a clinical late challenge, breaking at 5-5.

The set unfolded into a tiebreaker the Spanish player took by storm, notching his triumph with an ace to nail his fifth Top 10 career win at tour level.

All in all, he won 71 percent of the first serve points, while Ruud took 68 percent.

Moreover, Fokina fired 58 winners to 33 unforced errors, saving four of the seven break points he faced.

Next, he will face American Mackenzie McDonald, who ousted home hero Milos Raonic 6-3, 6-3 in 71 minutes earlier on Thursday.

On Friday, the World No. 59 will compete in his maiden career Masters 1000 quarterfinal, meeting for the second time on tour with Davidovich Fokina, who leads their series 1-0.

En route to the last eight, McDonald shocked sixth seed Andrey Rublev in their second-round matchup.

For his part, Fokina overpowered 13th seed Alexander Zverev with a staggering 6-1, 6-2 win victory on Wednesday.
