Madrid Open defending champion Ons Jabeur has pulled out of playing in the tournament after she injured her left calf during the semifinals of the Stuttgart Open, losing to eventual champion Iga Swiatek.

This injury has now placed doubt on whether or not the Tunisian will be able to play in next months French Open or not.

The current World Number 4 posted an update on her situation on her Twitter account.

Her update said:

Hello from Madrid, an update on my situation. Further to many medical exams, it shows that I have a small tear in my calf and I will need more time to recover.

I am sad to announce that I wont be able to compete and defend my title this year at the Madrid Open. I would like to wish to everyone and the tournament a great event and looking forward to coming back next year.

Jabeur is the third high-profile player to pull out of Madrid. Also not playing are Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic who are also sidelined with injuries.

Last year, she went to the Madrid Open as one of the favorites but she lost in the opening round.

Also in 2022, she was the runner-up at Wimbledon and the US Open.

As of this time, it is not yet clear whether Jabeur will be fit enough to play at the French Open. The clay-court Grand Slam is not set to begin until May 28.
