Muguruza has not been in a professional match since January 30 this year. She announced her intentions for missing out on the grass and clay court seasons on her Instagram account.
“Spending time with my family and friends and it’s really been healthy and amazing so I am going to lengthen this period till summer,” Muguruza said.
She added: “Thanks for all the lovely messages and will be updating you guys.”
It is still uncertain if the tennis world would have Muguruza back by the fall. Many speculate that the Spaniard may have lost her enthusiasm for the tennis carousel.
Muguruza has won two Grand Slam titles, the 2016 French Open and the 2017 Wimbledon titles. She also won the 2021 WTA Tour Finals.
The 29-year-old Spaniard debuted in March 2012. She has since won a total of 10 tour-level titles. She is coached by Conchita Martinez.
In September 2017, she reached Number 1 in the World Rankings. As of April 3, 2023, she is ranked No.132 in the world.
She lost a bit of her form in 2022 and dropped out of the Top 50 that year. In 2023, she started her season by playing in the Adelaide International 1 as a wildcard. Unfortunately, she suffered a first-round exit, defeated by Bianca Andreescu.
