Both players won the US Open as a teen and both have been plagued by injuries in their careers but this time round, Andreescu triumphed in the hard-fought match.
It was a tight decider as Andreescu had won the last four games of the previous match.
“You never know what you’re going to expect, I just wanted to play my best with what I had and I think I did that,” said Andreescu.
“Emma played amazing and is an incredible player. I have a lot of respect for her and her results show how good she is.”
“I didn’t let my negative emotions get the best of me. I stayed positive, I was very energetic and I never gave up.”Andreescu will next go up against Maria Sakkari.
After her loss, Raducanu had this to say:
“I think that in the third obviously, I went Love-40 first game on her serve.”
“She played a few good service points. I missed one second-serve return, which I went for against the wind. Then I think that I was going for my shots early third set, but I was just missing.”
Following her loss, she said that she will be seeking medical treatment for her painful wrist. She was visibly troubled by it during the match.
“It’s something I have been managing for some time. I just need to review after this tournament really and figure out what my next steps are,” she said.
“We have been managing it, keeping on top of it. I’m able to play in the short term. But the current solutions aren’t very viable long-term,” she added.
