The development was reported on by tournament organizers on Monday.
Kyrgios has not played since Tokyo last October after he made it to the quarterfinals of the US Open. He also missed out on playing in the Australian Open.
He underwent knee surgery in January to address the torn meniscus on his left knee. The surgery was later referred to as a “Great Success” by Kyrgios’ manager Daniel Horsfall. They were initially targeting an Indian Falls return for the Australian.
Last season, he had made it as far as the quarterfinals of Indian Wells before he lost to Rafael Nadal in three sets.
US Media has also reported that in addition to missing out on Indian Wells, Kyrgios will also not be playing in the Miami Open.
Last season was great for Kyrgios. He was the runner-up at Wimbledon, losing to the eventual winner Novak Djokovic.
He also received some good news for her personal life earlier this month after a Canberra court decided that he will not be facing any jail time for the assault charges raised against him by ex-girlfriend Chiara Passari.
It is not yet known if Kyrgios will be missing more tournaments aside from the Sunshine Duo.
