Wu Yibing Becomes Chinese Man to Win an ATP Title in the Open Era

Chinese player Wu Yibing had a dream run at the Dallas Open.

He beat John Isner in the finals 6-7(4), 7-6(3), 7-6(12).

Prior to his wins, no Chinese man has reached a tour-level final in the Open Era. He had beaten Taylor Fritz in the semis.

Earlier in the week, Wu had taken down Adrian Mannarino and Denis Shapovalov. He was then the second Chinese man to make it to the semifinals of a tour-level event. The first one was Pan Bing who made it to the semis in Seoul back in 1995.

“When I played today I wasn’t thinking about any score or winning. I just tried to perform my best,” Wu said after his win.

He also thanked his fans saying, “You guys were amazing, cheering for us every point. Thanks guys.”

After his title win, he said:

“I made history here for my country and for my home.” “I’m very proud of myself and especially thanks to all the fans and my team who came here to support. I couldn’t do this without any of you guys.”Isner spoke about the way Wu plays, saying:

“It’s like he plays every point the same, so definitely no nerves.”

“He gets a ball to hit, he hits it, and on this court, it’s hard to hit him a shot he is uncomfortable with… He is an unbelievable ballstriker and a very good talent.”
