Tennis star Nick Kyrgios has pleaded guilty to assaulting his girlfriend but has avoided conviction after the magistrate called the action a single act of stupidity.

He had first admitted to assaulting his then-girlfriend Chiara Passari back in January 2021 when she pushed her to the ground after they had a heated argument.

Krygios later admitted that he was not in a good place at the time and that his actions were something he deeply regrets.

“I know it wasn’t OK and I’m sincerely sorry for the hurt I caused,” he would later say in a statement.

The complaint with the police was filed by Passari 10 months after the incident after the couple had broken up.

Passari had said that the incident had severely traumatized her and has since experienced severe weight loss. She also said that it has affected her ability to sleep and form new romantic relationships.

Kyrgios lawyers argued that it was a one-time incident and that it was out of character for the tennis star.

Sam Borestein, a psychologist, told the court that Kyrgios had suffered from major depression. He also added that Kyrgios had depended on alcohol and drug use to help deal with the condition.

Magistrate Beth Campbell heard the case and later dismissed the appeal without convicting.

“I do not record a conviction against your name, I do not find any necessity to place you on a good behavior bond,” Campbell said.
