The Austrian is on his comeback run following a serious wrist injury he sustained in the 2021 grass-court season.
It has been a nine-month layoff for Thiem with the injury seeing him miss the 2022 Australian Open. He has since climbed from 350 in the rankings to No.102, winning 22 of his last 33 matches.
Unfortunately, that was not enough to grant him entry to the Aussie Open but now he has been awarded a wildcard.
Thiem has an Australian Open record of 19 wins out of 27 matches. He managed to reach the fourth round of the tournament in 2017, 2018, 2020, and 2021.
In that 2020 fourth round, he is best remembered for pushing Novak Djokovic to a five-set match.
In that same year, he had already upset Rafael Nadal before he was stopped by Djokovic.
Other players who have received Aussie Open wildcards include Taylor Townsend and Christopher Eubanks. Diane Parry and Luca Van Assche have also been granted wildcards.
The 2023 Australian Open is set to start on Monday, January 16.
