In a report by the Australian Broadcasting Corp. on Tuesday, it was revealed that the Serbian tennis star’s potential three-year ban from the country has been overturned by the immigration minister.
Back in January 2022, the Australian Border Force had blocked the 2021 Australian Open champion from entering the country because of his unvaccinated status. At the time, he was likely in for a three-year ban but the ABF did say that the ruling could be overturned after his case was assessed.
The Immigration Minister’s office, however, has refused to comment on the situation due to privacy reasons. That means any confirmation about whether or not he’s been granted entry into the country will have to come from Djokovic himself.
Since Djokovic’s deportation, Australia has had a change of government and now has a new immigration minister in Minister Andrew Giles.
The Australian Open has said that they are welcoming should Djokovic be able to enter the country but also said that they will not be doing any lobbying to the effect.
In his favor, Djokovic did leave after his visa was overturned.
A few months ago, Djokovic had said that he was hopeful that he would be allowed into the country to play in the opening tournament of the season.
He also indicated on Monday that his lawyers were in contact with the Australian Government.
The Australian Open is set to play out from January 16 to 29. Prior to that, there are a number of other tournaments that will be playing out as a warm-up to the Grand Slam.
