In 2016, the tennis star was suspended by the French Olympic team because of “unacceptable behavior.” In the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, she had first-round exits in both the women’s singles and women’s doubles.
Since then, Garcia has become a better player. This month, she made it to the semifinals of the US Open for the first time in her career.
In an interview before her appearance in the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, Garcia said:
“I did it twice already, the Olympics, it was a disaster every time, so at least I can only improve at the next one. Just to win a match would be good.”
Back in 2016, Garcia and then doubles partner Kristina Mladenovic had been banned from playing after they had publicly criticized the organizers of the Rio Olympics in a tweet. The suspension was later lifted.
However, Garcia’s bad luck continued through to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics where she did not make it past the opening rounds.
She is hoping for better results in the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics.
“Playing in my country is definitely very lucky conditions because it’s really rare I get this chance,” said Garcia.
“I’m looking forward to it. It’s going to be in Roland Garros so it’s going to be even more special. I will try to be ready and play my best.”
