Danielle Collins Reaches Her First US Open Fourth Round

Danielle Collins beat Alize Cornet 6-4, 7-6(9) in the third round, Saturday.

Match Highlights:

On her way towards the fourth round, she took down Naomi Osaka, Cristina Busca, and now Cornet. Collins is one of the four American women who have made it to Round 16 at the US Open. Other players who are still in the running include Coco Gauff, Alison Riske-Amritraj, and Jessica Pegula.

“Honestly, I’m having the time of my life. This is what we dream of as a kid, playing these night matches,” said Collins.

She broke Cornet in the fifth game of the opening set and continued with the relentless pressure. She soon had 20 winners in just the first eight games. The match went on tiebreak and lasted 1 hour and 52 minutes.

“I think if we look at Alize’s record she battles in every single match. When she goes down she doesn’t go down easy, Collins said. I knew I would have to follow the ball into the net, be patient, and win points two, three, four times.”

She will next face off against Sabalenka in the fourth round. They have played against each other three times in the past with Sabalenka in all of the matches. She is coming off her third-round win against Clara Burel.

“We played a battle here a couple of years ago,” Collins said.

It was three sets. She’s a very powerful player. She really exposes people’s weaknesses. But I think with how I’m playing, hopefully, I can just have that laser focus and use my strengths, yeah, just keep going for it.”
