Simona Halep and Beatriz Haddad Maia to Meet at National Bank Open Finals

The National Bank Opens womens finals will be a match between Simona Halep and Beatriz Haddad Maia.

Halep took down Pegular 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 but the two-time champion did not escape frustration. At one point in the game, she was doubled over, smashing her racket on the hard court of Sobeys Stadium. She had just missed a late return in the deciding third set.

The show of passion was a good sign for Halep who has been missing some of her fire lately.

The fire is back, she said with a smile.

Its a good sign if I do that. It looks like Im fighting. It helps me sometimes. I dont know if its always good or not, but it helps me.

She has recently started training with Serena Williams former coach Patrick Mouratoglou and she credits him for bringing back the fire in her.

Halep started working with Mouratoglou in 2020 and with his help, she won her first victory since 2020 at this seasons Melbourne Summer Set 1.

The person next to us. Patrick. He brought it, said Halep.

The vibe from the academy gave me the energy. To see all those kids fighting every day to touch the dream that they have I felt that I still can do it. I still have it inside myself.

The National Bank Open has not been easy for many players. All of the top six seeded players were eliminated. Haddad Maia took down three of those six Leylah Fernandez, Iga Swiatek, and now, Pliskova.

Just a year ago, Haddad Maia was ranked just inside the Top 200 in the world, now she is No.24 and by next week is expected to break into the Top 20.

She dominated in her match with Pliskova 6-4, 7-6 (9) with the second set going into a tiebreak. This is Haddad Maias first WTA 1000 final.

“It’s a special moment,” Haddad Maia said post-match. “I think I had a very tough draw. I had to push myself. I played a lot of tough moments.”

When asked about her upcoming match with Halep, she said: “[Halep is] a champion.

“She’s a person who works very hard. I know it will be a very tough battle, but I’m going to enjoy it. I’m going to leave everything on the court.

“I will try to play aggressive. I learned a lot today because in the moments that I wasn’t too aggressive, [Pliskova] was playing better than me. … I want to improve that for tomorrow. So I’m going to try to enjoy and play point by point.”
