Cressy reached his first two ATP finals earlier this year. He lost to Rafael Nadal in Melbourne back in January and to Taylor Fritz in Eastbourne in June. The third times the charm as it turns out since he beat Bublik in two hours and 23 minutes.
“It’s an incredible feeling to win my first title,” Cressy said. “I never thought I would win my first title this way. I stuck with it and I got lucky.
“I look forward to more titles. It’s a very special feeling.”
Kazakh player Bublik also won his first ATP title this year in Montpellier.
“I’m very upset with the outcome but I’d like to congratulate Max on his first title,” Bublik said. “He had great luck.”
The match went into a tie-breaker set where Cressy took the lead for good after Bublik double-faulted. The American then took the last three points, securing his victory.
Sundays final was the first time that Cressy and Bublik met on court. Bublik is currently ranked at No.42 while Cressy is at No.41. Both are expected to rise in the rankings next week with Cressy reaching a career-high singles rank of No.32 while Bublik will rise to No.39.
