Iga Swiatek’s Winning Streak Ends as Alize Cornet Beats Her at Wimbledon

Current World No.

She started slow in the opening but appeared to battle back for a while before Cornet eventually took the first set. In the second set, Swiatek quickly jumped in win a 2-0 lead but control was quickly back to Cornet, winning the next six games and closing out the match.

“Honestly, yeah usually I am hard on myself. Here, I know how I felt before matches, I know how I felt when I was practicing. Let’s just say that I didn’t feel like I’m in the best shape, so I’m kind of aware that this could happen,” Swiatek said.

Despite the loss, the 21-year-olds winning streak has her tied with Martina Hingis own back in 1997.

Of her defeat of the World No.1, Cornet said, “I have no words right now, it reminds me of the time I beat Serena on the same court, eight years ago exactly. This court is a lucky charm for me.”

The Williams defeat she refers to was in 2014 when she beat then No.1 Serena Williams in Court One. She now has a record of 4-1 against World No.1s.

Cornet is next set to match up with Australian Ajla Tomljanovic on Monday.

Earlier in the tournament, Swiatek had defeated Jana Fett last Tuesday at Centre Court. She beat Fett 6-0, 6-3, dominating the first set in what was her first match since winning the French Open.
