This is the fourth time that the Croatian tennis player, Cilic, has made it into the quarter-finals of the French Open.
He will next go up against Casper Ruud in the semis. Rudd is coming off a win against Holger Rudd. The match is set for Friday and the winner will go up against either Rafael Nadal or Alexander Zverev.
This win by Cilic makes him the fifth active mens player to have reached the semifinals of all four of the Grand Slam events.
Other players who share the honor include Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Andy Murray.
Speaking about this, Cilic said, “It’s an absolutely fantastic achievement for me, to be mentioned among them - these guys have been on the top of the game so many years.
In his on-court interview, he said, “There was a lot of heart and one of us had to go down. Today was my day but Andrey also played incredibly well - bad luck to him.
“When you play this long there are always going to be ups and downs during the match.”
The Rune and Ruud matchup was record-breaking for each player. Rune is the first Danish man to reach the quarter-finals of the French Open and Rudd is the first Norwegian man to make it to a Grand Slam eight.
In his on-court interview, Rudd said, “It’s a big day for Norwegian tennis - Ulrikke Eikeri reached the mixed doubles final today so she is even one step further than me.”
“I will have to bring my ‘A’ game in the semi-final because Marin has played well all week and it is going to be a tough match.”
