Speculations of Retirement Gone as Davenport enters the Australian Open
American tennis player, Lindsay Davenport, has fueled speculations from media and fans worldwide that she might retire. Her last game for this season was back in August in the US Open, after which she did not play a single match.
At still the young age of 32, Davenport was already a three-time Grand Slam winner. Speculations of retirement were quite disappointing for many fans and tennis enthusiasts as this would be an outright waste of the young lady’s talent.
However, when Davenport made the decision to join in the Australian Open, many were excited and one of them was Craig Tiley, the tournament director. According to Tiley, everyone is excited with Davenport’s return not just because she is a great tennis player but because she is a great ambassador for the sport of Tennis.
This would not be the first time for Davenport to play in the Australian Open. In fact, she has already won an Australian singles title and a Wimbledon title in 1999 as well as a US Open title further back in 1998. In 2008, Davenport participated in the Australian Open but lost to Maria Sharapova in the second round.
Davenport took a break the from Women’s Tennis Association circuit for the most part of 2006 to 2007 to give birth to her son, Jagger. Entries for the 2009 Australian Open has already been closed but with Davenport included in the list. For the former World Number 1 woman tennis player to come back and play the sport once again in one of the major events of the season, her match would definitely be a much anticipated one for the coming year.
