Barty did not fail her Australian tennis fans as she became the first home grown Australian to win a singles title since 1978 when Chris ONeil did it. The wait spanned more than four decades.
She now has three Grand Slam titles. She won last years Wimbledon and she won the French Open in 2019. She is, without a doubt, the top player on the women’s tour at the moment.
In her post-match interview, she said, “I’ve said numerous times I’m so lucky tonight to have numerous people here that love and support me, I’m a fortunate and lucky girl to have so much love in my corner, we started together right from the start. We did it all together, nobody has changed from our team. I love you to death.
“As an Aussie the most important part of this tournament is being able to share it with so many people and the crowd, you have been nothing short of exceptional.
“This crowd is one of the most fun I’ve ever played in front of and you guys brought me so much joy today and helped me play my best tennis, so thanks for all your love and support over the last couple of weeks.
“This is a dream come true for me and I am so proud to be an Aussie. See you next time.”
Collins did not make it easy for the 25-year-old. Her impressive backhand had given Barty all sorts of problems. The American also had a great journey to the finals. Last year, she had announced that she was going on an indefinite leave from the sport while she underwent surgery for her endometriosis.
She also suffered abdominal injury at the French Open. She has, however, had an impressive run at this years Australian Open.
Her and Bartys game led into a tie-break with Barty eventually closing it at 7-2.
Celebrations are now in order at the Rod Laver court. Australia once again has a home grown champion.
