Leylah Fernandez holds up the runner-up trophy after losing to Emma Raducanu during the women's singles final of the US Open tennis championships, Saturday, Sept. 11, 2021, in New York.

Leylah Fernandez, 18, was denied the US Open trophy when she lost to Emma Raducanu, 19, at the US Open Championship which was held in Flushing Meadows.

The two players shared a warm hug after the match which ended in a 4-6, 3-6 defeat for the Canadian.

Despite not having walked away with the trophy, Fernandez went away with a positive spirit saying, I want to be back here next year. She also added in reference to her silver platter, “Only, with the right one,” she added. “With the right trophy.”

She also acknowledged the significance of the day by saying to fans, “Thank you for having my back, thank you for cheering me on, I hope I can be as strong and resilient as New York has been the last 20 years.”

The match was held on September 11, 2021.

What would have been a fairytale finish for the Canadian instead became a stellar coming-out event for Raducanu who was a qualifier. She is the first female Briton to win Flushing Meadows since 1968.

When asked about the match, Fernandez had this to say, “Unfortunately, today I just made one too many mistakes, and I think Emma noticed it and she took advantage of it.

Raducanu said of Fernandez, “She played incredible tennis I thought the level was extremely high, and I hope we play each other in many more tournaments and hopefully finals.”

The match was highlighted by a medical break after Raducanu sustained an injury. The break clearly had Fernandez frustrated, but Raducanu rallied back and ended up winning the whole thing.

Asked about the break later, Fernandez said that she just wanted to play. She also said “It was just too bad that it happened at that specific moment, with me and the momentum that I had, “It’s sports, it’s tennis, and you’ve just got to move on.”

En route to the championships, the Canadian had defeated Angelique Kerber, Naomi Osaka, Aryna Sabalenka, and Elina Svitolina.
