She produced yet another daring performance to set up her place at a semi-final match with Aryna Sabalenka.
The Canadian teen, who just turned 19, showed players and spectators alike the devastating power she has after winning a tense tie-break with Svitolina. During the quarterfinals, she beat Ukrainian Svitolina 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5).
The 26-year-old Svitolina was able to reverse a 5-2 deficit. However, she could not stop the powerful play delivered by Fernandez. Fil-Canadian Leylah Fernandez showed yet again why she is known as the Giant Slayer with this recent win.
Fernandez has beaten two other top players in the past. She defeated former number 1 and US Open defending champion Naomi Osaka and dominated 2016 winner Angelique Kerber.
Now, she beat Olympic medalist Elina Svitolina to reach her first-ever major semi-final. Fernandez has shown incredible composure in the US Open, staying calm and composed on the court while showcasing an effortless power.
She is currently the youngest woman to reach the women’s singles finals at the US Open since Maria Sharapova in 2005. Fernandez is among other teens Carlos Alvarez and Emma Raducanu who reached the fourth round.
By trusting her game and her weapons, Fernandez showed she go much further no matter who the opponent is.
On the other hand, 2nd seed Sabalenka dominated Barbora Krejcikova, the French Open winner, in their match 6-1, 6-4.
