Karolina Pliskova has successfully won over top-seeded Aryana Sabalenka with a record of 6-3, 6-4 in the finals of the National Bank Open on Saturday.
The Czech player is scheduled to play against other semi-finalists, between Italian Camila Giorgi and American Jessica Pegula, on Sunday.
Sabalenkla was ranked no. 3 has done major inconsistencies during the match, causing her to commit 5-double faults and save only four out of seven breakpoints. During the second set, Sabalenka was seen throwing her racket in frustration. On the other hand, Pliskova finished the set with 10 aces.
Sabalenka led the WTA Tour and she started the match with a remarkable set of aces, however, she struggled to return serves when she encountered the sixth-ranked Czech player. Pliskova led in a 2-1 lead after the Belarusian player sent a ball long after an extended rally. Pliskova counter-attacked using her strong serve, which saves her record with an ace and two other serves that Sabalenka could no longer control.
In an interview, Pliskova shared that she was super solid during the match and she did everything that she is supposed to do to win the match. By defeating the 3rd-ranked Sabalenka, Pliskova is set to enter the Top 5 of the WTA singles rankings on Monday.
During the Wimbledon semifinals, Pliskova has also defeated Sabalenka in a match. However, Pliskova was defeated by the World No. 1 female tennis player, Ashleigh Barty, during the finals.
