For the first time, World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty moves forward to Wimbledon semi-finals after crushing Ajla Tomljanovic.
The 25-year-old Australian defeated her fellow Australian 6-1, 6-3, reaching the last four to go against Angelique Kerber.
Kerber was the 2018 Wimbledon champion who progressively won in her matches to reach the last four after a convincing victory 6-2, 6-3 against Karolina Muchova. The next semi-final match will be Karolina Pliskova versus Aryna Sabalenka on Thursday.
Pliskova won over Viktorija Golubic while Sabalenka defeated Ons Jabeur in the quarter-finals. With this, 16 different players took 16 semi-final places in the last four Grand Slams.
Barty’s match against Tomljanovic was tough, with Barty almost broken several times. During the first set, Barty was no match against Tomljanovic, who won six games in a row. But during the second set, Tomljanovic seemed to appear stronger and broke Barty in the opening.
However, it wasnt until the sixth game when she hit her second winner. Tomljanovic broke Barty again in the seventh game, but the latter soon hit strong with an ace that wins her second match point. With her victory, Barty shared that Ajla was an incredible competitor that always brought the best in her and that shes thankful for their match.
In the semi-final, Barty will be facing Kerber for the fifth time after the German defeated Muchova. According to Barty, this match will be the ultimate test as Kerber had success in the semi-finals before. As for Kerber, shes excited to play Barty on grass court for the first time.
