The news was confirmed by tournament organisers who confirmed that she was being excluded for leaving not only the Greenbrier Resort where the event is being played, but the State of West Virginia as well.
WorldTeamTennis (WTT) is a professional league featuring mixed teams playing in a league format. Each match consists of five sets, each of which must feature one men and womens singles and doubles match, and a mixed double event. The scoring system is different from traditional matches and games are shorter to make them more attractive to TV viewers.
Over the years, many of the Sports greats have featured in the event including Billie Jean King, Chris Evert, Evonne Goolagong and Martina Navratilova on the women’s side, whilst Rod Laver, Bjorn Borg, John McEnroe and Pete Sampras are some of the men to have graced it.
This years list of participants was headed by former world number one Kim Clijsters and 2017 US Open Champion Sloane Stephens, and was held under strict safety conditions. All players and staff were required to self-quarantine in the United States before its commencement, and players must submit to regular tests and daily temperature checks. They are also expected to remain within the Greenbrier resort for the duration of the tournament.
WTT is one of the few sporting events in the US which currently allows fans to attend. A maximum of 500 spectators a day are allowed into the Greenbrier Centre Court, and they are always required to wear masks and undergo their own temperature checks.
There is an irony in the fact that Collins has been thrown out of the league for breaking the tournaments coronavirus protocols. Last month she was extremely critical of Novak Djokovic, after the mens number one year expressed doubts about playing this years US Open given the anti-Covid-19 precautions proposed.
