Former world number 7 and Swiss tennis player Patty Schnyder won her first title in three years when she defeated Austrian teenager Tamira Paszek to bag the Bali Open title on Sunday, September 14, 2008. Second-seeded Schnyder won the title with a score of 6-3, 6- 0 in just 67 minutes against Paszek, who was ranked at 94.
“I’m very happy and also very tired. I wanted to win this tournament and I did. She pushed me all the way and I had to do my best and move well. She would not allow me to lose my focus.” Schyder said after the match . Paszek had earlier defeated Daniela Hantuchova in the SF and Flavia Pennetta and Sara Errani in the earlier rounds. Schnyder for her part had advanced to her second final of the season by defeating Russian pro Nadia Petrova, once a top 5 player, with a score of 7-5, 6-1.
Schnyder’s past wins included 11 WTA singles titles, making this win the 12th singles WTA title for the 29-year-old. Her last victory had been in 2005 when she won the Cincinnati Open. The Swiss had lost 7 finals since then. This was Schnyder’s second final after she was defeated by Serena Williams in Bangalore in back in February. This would have been Paszek’s second career title following her previous success in Portoroz in Croatia in September 2006.
