The US is the defending champion to the title and will visit the home country of the four-time French Open, Wimbledon and the Olympic champion next week for the semi-finals. Together with Rafael Nadal are Captain Emilio Sanchez’s selected player namely David Ferrer, Feliciano Lopez, and Fernando Verdasco. On the other hand, the US Team is composed of Andy Roddick, twin brothers, Bob and Mike Bryan, and James Blake. They are captained by Patrick McEnroe.
The game will be held on a temporary clay court at the Madrid’s Plaza de Toros Las Ventas on September 19-21. The player to win the Spain-USA competition will play against the Argentina-Russia winner at the finals in November. The Argetinians are hosting the game against the Russians next week as well.
This is the ninth time the United States will be meeting the Spanish players in their tennis game history. Specifically, the fifth time since early 2000. The Americans already garnered the a 5-3 record against Spain. They won in the World Group quarterfinal last 2007 at Winston-Salem held in North Carolina.
Fans and tennis enthusiasts are all eyes in the upcoming Davis Cup. Established in the early 1900, the tournament began as the world’s largest international men’s team competition. It is held annually with different countries hosting the event. Every year, there are over 50 nations competing. In 2008 there are at least 127 countries that will join the competition.
Currently, it is the United States team that holds much of the lead titles. In fact, they defeated the Russian team in the finals last year, held in Portland.
