It’s another gold for Roger Federer, this time after pairing up with fellow Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka to capture Switzerland’s second Olympic gold in tennis doubles after Marc Rosset’s gold medal victory in the 1992 Olympics. This is also Wawrinka’s first title.>
After Wawrinka earned the pair an early break in the fourth set, the team sailed through the match, defeating Sweden’s Simon Aspelin and Thomas Johansson with a final score of 6-3 6-4 6-7 6-3. The win is more than a consolation to the 12-time Grand Slam champ after his disappointing loss to James Blake in the QF of the Olympic singles. And although he will be seeding his title as tennis’ number one to Rafael Nadal, a reign which spanned 4 and a half years, it definitely will not hurt as much with an Olympic gold now under his belt.
After hitting a service winner in the fourth set, followed by a reflex volley and another service winner, Federer shot a second serve on the championship point which stumped Johansson, giving the Swiss team the gold. “It’s not the first time this tournament or in my life I had to serve for a big match,” Federer said. “It’s basically the moment you dream of being in, even though there is so much pressure to it,” Federer said after the game. “It is like a fantastic dream comes true, I feel really happy to win the gold medal. It is great, I enjoy that,” he was later heard as saying.
