Commonly called the penalty box, a penalty area is a rectangular shape that measures 44 yards by 18 yards. Within the area is the penalty spot, which is in-line with the center of the goal, and a penalty arc, which is often used during a penalty kick. The goal area is also inside the box, where the players attempt to make a score.
A penalty area has its own special rules relating to offenses caused by the players and the awarding of penalty kicks. Although there are other uses of this area, when and how the ball is played in this box has limitation. Hence, players must know the specific rules related to this box if he wants to avoid getting a penalty and risking a reward for the other team.
Functions of Penalty Area
The penalty area is used to award penalties. Deliberate fouls that are committed by a player, such as physical fouls like pushing and kicking the other player, are punishable by awarding the injured player a penalty kick or a direct free kick. If the award is a penalty kick, it will take place at the penalty spot where the player will attempt to score a goal. During the time that this type of kick is taken, only the goalkeeper can defend the goal. The rest of the goalkeeper’s teammates should stay outside the area. If the award sanctioned by the referee is a direct free kick, the defending team can stay within the penalty box to block the kick but should be at least 10 yards away from the ball.
Handling the Ball in the Penalty Area
In football, the players use their feet to take possession and control the ball. They are prohibited from touching the ball unless the referees award a player a throw-in. In the case of goalkeepers, on the other hand, they are the only player permitted to hold the ball in their hands as long as they remain within the penalty zone. Once the goalkeeper is outside the area, the rule that prohibits the player from touching the ball will take place. If the goalkeeper gets in contact with the ball with his hands or arms when he is outside the penalty box, then the opposing team will be rewarded with a direct free kick.
